Maria Davidsmeier, LICSW

Welcome! Here’s a little bit about me and my perspective on this work…

I’m a clinical social worker and therapist. Connecting with my clients and seeing the rewards of their hard work is my passion. Many of my clients have experienced painful traumatic events and ongoing invalidation throughout their lives. As a result, they often struggle to recognize and manage strong emotions, sometimes making decisions or acting in a way that they later regret. They feel overwhelmed by shame and unsure about how to go forward. The good news is that no one has to feel this way. It’s possible to become more capable and less reactive. Imagine being able to look back on past experiences to acknowledge their impact without allowing them to define you or determine your life going forward. There is a way to learn, heal and make lasting changes. I use a therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to focus on learning and practicing the skills you need to act more effectively. Once you’re safe and stable, we’ll use therapies including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Prolonged Exposure to process past traumatic events. My job is to serve as your guide in this process, to sit with your story, regardless of how painful or intense it might be. As a therapist, I aim to be attentive, empathetic and direct. I use humor during sessions and show up as my real self – and feel fortunate to do this work. Seeing clients thrive in the face of life’s challenges with increased insight, understanding and confidence is a true privilege.

Clinical Training and Work History

I have completed training in EMDR (Maiberger Institute, 2016), Prolonged Exposure (Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety, 2022) and DBT (Behavioral Tech Insititute, 2023). I currently work as an outpatient therapist and clinical supervisor for the behavioral health team at The Family Partnership in Minneapolis.
